Pivot Northwest is 1 of 12 faith innovation research organizations across the nation funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. Their mission is to better understand how the Church interacts with young adults in order to design, launch, and evaluate new ministries by working with “area faith communities”. The organization first started as The PNW Faith Innovation Team but recognized a need to better brand themselves.
My part as Lead Designer is to help launch a tangible brand for the organization that gives people something they can understand immediately. The organization is the only hub based in the pacific northwest so I chose to reflect the culture and aesthetics of the PNW within the brand through color. The number 3 reflects both the trinity within the Christian theology and the three pillars that make up Pivot NW’s area of focus. This was a key concept in talking about the brand from the beginning. The hexagonal frame was inspired by nature (honey combs, rock formations, snowflakes, and other crystalizing structures). These natural formations reflect a mathematical efficiency and innovation within nature which speaks into the organizations mission for innovation within the Church.
This is an early version of Pivot Northwest’s video podcast animation intro. The organization is moving into podcasts and including them on YouTube. To increase brand awareness and add to the brand value, I created this intro animation to give a quick visual narrative of the organization as well as bring them into a cafe setting with the audio to add to the northwest city vibe that Pivot operates in.
Around the Table A-Frame Board Advertisement
Around the Table is a Lynnwood, WA based store/gathering place that offers a space for people to buy, sell, and play table top and card games. This family friendly business features a wide variety of beer on tap, soda, and ice cream.
The owners were looking to advertise their business on a 2’x3’ A-frame board to be seen from by vehicle and foot traffic. My job was to incorporate the main aspects that make up the business in a quick and easy to understand advertisement. In doing so, I focused on a 3-read system:
- 1st read: Quick and easy to read information from a distance - 2nd read: The Information that gives further context to the main point - 3rd read: The detailed information about the store meant for walking traffic
Readability from a distance was key when choosing the typeface. I chose Alternate Gothic because of the increased hight making it easier to read by passing traffic.
Book Design: Personal Interest Project (Senior Capstone)
I've always believed that family is the strongest foundation to a person's development in life. It is through family that we first learn how to love, forgive, and cope with the hardships in life. I started this project to learn about and shed light on the inner workings of family life and the struggles that individuals face when coming out to family and friends and the lasting effect it leaves.
This project’s primary focus was learning and executing a human centered design approach to the design process. What came out of it was a better understanding of a part of my family that I never knew. The artifact of this study is a physical book intended to tell the coming-out story in a person’s family upbringing that offers key points of advice and reflection.
First hand experience is key to this project. To gain that insight, I sat down with my brother to find out how his experiences made him the person he is today. Through the interview, I wanted to showcase both the normalcy that day-to-day life might be or have been like as well as the critical moments that shape our lives and make us who we are today. This coffee table book offers a relatively light read that can lead to further conversations by those who read it.
I chose the a modular grid for the layout as a visual reflection of the way we compartmentalize the different parts of our lives. This layout allowed for a sleek visual back and forth between interviewer and interviewee.
The process involves surface-level researching into the life of the person and then constructing a few initial questions in order to start a conversation. From there, further questions form based off of their responses and insights. It's meant to be a free flowing conversation that gets into some underlying emotions and things that may have been repressed in order to better understand a person's journey.

Magazine: Swiss International Graphic Design
This project was done as a study in Swiss design on 19th and 20th century graphic designers. Each person in the group had a specific designer to write about and create a unique layout related to the style of their designer. My publication featured Massimo Vignelli with a layout reflecting a simplistic nod to Vignelli’s New York Subway design system. The group collectively focused on creating a magazine layout with early Swiss designers, but was individual in each page layout design, and focus towards a specific designer.
